Rule One of Business: Get Paid

To get paid, just like you would figure is vitally fundamental to your business because if you aren’t being paid, what are you doing in business?

You would be surprised at the number of business people who let their clients to simply pay when and if they remember it. I am acquainted with one trader who persistently gets bad debts like weeds. Why? Just because he won’t bring himself to ask for the cash and lets people use him.

If you give someone credit, only do so because they have proved their worth to you by paying cash on delivery (COD) for a period. Secondly, you must see whether they have the means to pay you - otherwise you shouldn’t do business with them. Don’t kid yourself into the pattern of “I need the work” or “I need the sales”. It’s pointless when you do the service or providing the goods for zero if you are not getting paid.

Tell your client that when the work is done with, you require cash or cheque. They should be likely to have it there at completion and you will not have to ask for your fee.

They will take the invoice and simply understand they have to pay for it now without you needing to say a word. Fabricate a “nasty boss” who will skin you alive if you can’t go back with the cash for the job.

Set up your branch to provide you with Merchant facilities so you can take credit cards such as Mastercard and Visa. Many people have credit cards and it would prevent the issue of the customer not owning a cheque book or not having the cash in their wallet.

Moreover, don’t be afraid to keep hold on any goods til after payment has been made. Remember, until the goods are paid for, they are still yours.

After you take all this detail, telephone the bank branch and make sure that they operate an account at there. Then, phone all of the trade reference and inquire if they pay their fees punctually or if they have any difficulties with them.

Most people will be willing to tell you if the person is troublesome. If everything is OK, allow them a moderate level of debt, say no more than $500 (depending on your business). Monitor the operation of the account for a few months before allowing this amount to be exceeded.
