How many times have you sent business cards to print and collected yet another version of your corporate colour? Ever been frantic to see your advert in the latest newspaper and then recognized that the crucial tag line is nowhere to be found or your logo has been ruined.

There is only one way to avoid this from happening and that is to set up a style guide. Not only will a style guide help you oversee the reproduction of your logo - it will also help you extend your brand recognition – which many argue is one of the strongest selling tools.

We have placed the below steps together for you as a starting point.

Step 1 : Outline the audience for your Style Guide. Is this for staff to utilize in-house or is this for suppliers and contractors to refer to?

Step 2 : Mark what your output uses are. This is important because you will need different logos and file formats for example, black and white publication adverts in comparison to vehicle graphics.

Step 3 : Define the tone for the copy and content required. For example you may requirecopy rules for printed content and then copy rules for website content.

Content rules cover all punctuation rules and how to refer to the business and team.

Step 4 : Assure you layout all the design templates so it is clear how and where the logo and branding sits on all the different pieces of collateral that may be reprinted.

Step 5 : Make certain to include any contributing logos or logos of business that are affiliated with you. It’s also important that you mail a copy of the layout to these companies to guarantee they approve the layout of their logo as they too may have their own Style Guide and hierarchy layout rules.

Step 6 : Assure that grammar, spelling and contact details are correct.

Step 7 : Assure that when suppliers are using the Style Guide they understand~know~discern~apprehend} that a proof needs to be dispatched~sent~mailed~commissioned}to you to be confirmed as correct.

Make your Style Guide finished and as established as possible. Then have it saved in an email friendly file format and have a couple printed. Once this is done we strongly advocate a training session – whereby your design studio comes in and trains your staff on how to put to work the Style Guide and most importantly your brand.

For graphic design Brisbane, logo design Brisbane and web design Brisbane, contact Bydaughters today. We help your brand build business.

The common question asked when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different models available, it can be overwhelming for the buyer to decide between those technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors give better image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph tells you why DLP projectors struggle with projecting a similar level of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your room on your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And such is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is ultimately significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to create the projector image. An important point to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your screen at once. The way a DLP projector runs is widely different and even the way an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to projecting an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then draw each coloured element of the image into a complete image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver high brightness and superb colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have put a white segment into the colour wheel to improve overall brightness, but this further damages colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be better. For those who don’t know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At one glance, this can seem to be a plus, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is in use. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to see needs moving images, DLP projection technology also has image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this problem because the colours are processed at the same time. DLP builders have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up problem, but the price tag of these projectors make them not practical for many businesses and consumers.

Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how different colours of light refract various amounts when directed through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light at different levels. Most of the time with a DLP projector, a superfluous yellow colour will come through above and a spill of blue will be projected below something as simple as a single black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to minimize these effects on the projected image, because each colour is projected on separate LCD panels.

The isolated veritable benefit (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to mobility and must be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If overall picture quality is crucial to you, then the choice is a no-brainer. Go with an LCD projector! LCD projectors will definitely produce bright, colourful images with fewer image blips.

As the Dutch rose to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht became a leisure craft used initially by royalty and secondly by the burghers in the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private challenges. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), made other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 wager. Yachting was found to be classy among the affluent and aristocracy, but after that point the trend did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and had much naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club went on, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after joining with other societies, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some ordered fashion on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to the throne in 1820, it was then called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continued setting of British yacht racing. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the rise of George IV. Each member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large stakes were held, and the club life was splendid. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English gained control. Sailing was for the most part for pleasure and found its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and set a minimum of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts took the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the later half of the 19th century. The design of bigger yachts was first largely put upon by the success of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and crafted in the modern sense, with merely a model for an outline. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the application of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what it had done earlier for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats were individually custom-built, there arose a desire for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were built. Thus, a rating rule was decreed, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and edited in 1919. In modern times, one of the rapidly blossoming areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to the same dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing such boats can be done on an even basis with no handicapping required. A prime example is the standard International America’s Cup Class adopted for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting belonged mostly for the aristocracy and the wealthy, money was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The promotion and preference of smaller yachts happened in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the value of small craft. Thereafter in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and recreational yachts became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, when steam was set to take the place of sail power in public craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in pleasure vessels. Large power yachts were furthered to a high element, and long-distance cruising became a favourite occupation of the affluent. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave rise to boats powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. Like naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service in World War II.

As more sizeable and more dependable internal-combustion engines were developed, many bigger yachts began using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, advanced for World War I. During the decade that followed, big power-yacht creation flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that time the largest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of larger power boats fell away after 1932, and the style after that was in preference of smaller, less costly boats. Following World War II, many small naval craft were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a widespread popular competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually sailing and maintaining their own small leisure boats. The amount of boats and sailors is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional places by the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes are distinguished by the effect they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that places the same relative liability on all taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income grow in relative levels. A progressive tax is characterizable by a more than proportional rise in the tax burden in regard to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional increase in the comparable onus. Hence, progressive taxes are regarded as removing inequity in income distribution, while regressive taxes may have the result of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are normally believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are categorically progressive, however, could become less so for the upper-income class—especially if a taxpayer is permitted to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by leaving out particular income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income categories can also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are made.

Income measured over a given year does not necessarily give the most suitable measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory rises in income may be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to provide for consumption by reducing savings. Ergo, if taxation is made comparable alongside “permanent income,” it would be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the share of own income consumed or spent on a specific good decreases as the rate of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a standard amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is difficult to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of dictating who bears the tax burden depends fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In regarding the economic purposes of taxation, it is relevant to distinguish between varied ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are specified in the law; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income grows by one dollar. Ergo, if tax onus grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates should regard provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than specified by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for assessing incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to realise the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may be reliant on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the percentage of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates commonly grow with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households can dampen these effects, forcing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that decrease as income grows.

Projectors of higher expense and capability can utilise three separated LCD panels, creating separate red, green, and blue images that blend to form a coloured image on the screen.

The growing demand for video presentations has granted a special emphasis on the switching speed of liquid crystals. This has necessitated the manufacture of objects employing smectic liquid crystals, particular types of which have a better electro-optical response than nematic liquid crystals. The surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) display is at this time the most sophisticated smectic device. In it the liquid crystal molecules are managed in layers that are perpendicular to the substrate planes, which are distanced by one or two micrometres, and within the layers the molecules are on a tilt, as shown in the figure. The host liquid crystal holds optically active molecules, and a minor result of the optical activity and the tilt of the molecules is the presence of a permanent charge separation, or ferroelectric dipole, similar to the ferromagnetic dipole of a magnet. The direction of this dipole is perpendicular to the tilt direction of the molecules and within the plane of the layers. Therefore, there exists a permanent charge separation across the liquid crystal layer in the SSFLC, and its sign is directly paired to the tilt direction of the molecules. An applied voltage of the corresponding sign can reverse the direction of this dipole in tens of microseconds and hence reverse the tilt direction of the molecules. The respective change in optical properties can effect a change from light to dark when one or more polarizers are employed.

SSFLC devices have been produced for bigger passive-matrix presentations, but their expensiveness and intricacy has prevented them from enjoying any particular progress on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, display some promise for use as elements in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their fast reacting allows them to be utilised in time-sequential colour systems, in which costly colour filters are emulated by a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in fast succession (around 100 cycles in a second). For example, the liquid crystal might be switched to a transmissive state during the red and green periods but then to a nontransmissive state during the blue period, having the upshot that the eye sees an average of red and green light, or the colour yellow.

Out of all furniture needs, the chair might be the most important. While many other objects (save the bed) are created to support objects, the chair supports the human form. The term chair is intended to be viewed here in the general sense, from stool to throne to derivative forms including the bench and sofa, which should be seen as extended or connected chairs, and whose character (i.e., whether they are intended for sitting or reclining) is not clearly labeled.

The social history of the chair is as interesting as its history as an art and craft. The chair is not just a physical support or an aesthetic piece of art; it historically is a symbol of social rank. In the Medieval royal courts there were social distinctions between being led to a chair with arms, sitting on a chair with a back but no arms, or having to sit on a stool. In the last century, the director’s or manager’s chair has developed a symbol of superior standing, as well as in democratic government debate the speaker sits on a raised platform.

In its furniture purpose, the chair can be used for a range of various forms. There are chairs structured to suit man’s age and physical condition (the high chair, the wheelchair) and to show his status in society (the executive chair, the throne). During the past there were chairs used for birthing (birth chairs); during the 20th century, there have been chairs used for ending life (the electric chair). We design chairs with one, two, three, and/or four legs, chairs with or without arms, and chairs with or without backs. There are chairs that can be folded up, chairs on wheels, and chairs on runners.

Our modern lifestyle has designated new chairs for automobiles and aircraft. Each and every one of these chair kinds has been evolved to match to growing human desires. From its close association with man, the chair lives to its full purpose only when in employ. Whereas it does not make a difference to one’s appreciation of a cupboard or a chest of drawers if there are items inside or not, a chair is really understood and fairly judged by a person using it, because chair and sitter complement one another. Thus the different parts of the chair were named according to the elements of our human parts: arms, legs, feet, back, and seat.

Because the primary job of a chair is to support a body, its worth is tested primarily for how suitably it fulfills this practical purpose. In the build of a chair, the designer is limited in certain static rules and principal measurements. In these boundaries, however, the chair maker has extensive freedom.

The history of the chair covered dates of several thousand years. There are cultures that held iconic chair types, as seen of the principal craft in the arenas of technique and design. From such societies, particular note needs to be made of ancient Egypt and Greece; China; Spain and The Netherlands in the 17th century; England in the 18th century; and France in the 18th century during the lifetimes of Louis XV and Louis XVI.

Egypt
Two ancient Egyptian chair forms, both the upshot of masterful make, were a finding from tomb discoveries. The first of the two is a four-legged chair with a back, the other a folding stool. The iconic Egyptian chair would have four legs designed akin to those of a chosen animal, a curved seat, and a sloping back supported with vertical stretchers. From this design a strong triangular form was obtained. There seemed to be no marked difference from the creation of Egyptian thrones and chairs for typical people. The only variation lies in the decorative ornamentation, in the choice of pricey inlays. The Egyptian folding stool probably was created to be an easily packed seat for army. As a camp stool that chair stayed around until much later times. But the stool also was designed as the character of a ceremonial seat, its original role as a folding stool simply forgotten. This can from today’s evidence be found, from as early as 1366–57 BC in two stools, crafted in ebony with ivory inlay work and gold mounts, from the tomb of Tutankhamen. They are in the shape of folding stools but aren’t able to be folded because the seats were created out of wood. The simplistic build of the folding stool, made of two frames that rotate on metal bolts and support a seat of leather or fabric set between them, reappears but some time later in the Bronze Age folding chairs of Scandinavia and northern Germany. The most recognised of those is the folding stool, crafted from ashwood, now found at Guldhøj (National Museum in Copenhagen).

Greece and Rome
The iconic Greek chair, the klismos, is recognised not in any ancient fossil still in form but from a trove of pictorial objects. The iconic kind is the klismos posited on the Hegeso Stele at the Dipylon burial place near Athens (c. 410 BC). This is a chair with a backward-sloping, curved backboard and four curving legs, only two of them are displayed. These odd legs were possibly created out of bent wood and were in that case needed to bear huge pressure under the weight of the sitter. The joints fastening the legs to the frame of the seat had to be therefore extremely stable and were overtly drawn.

The Romans borrowed from the Greek design; some casts of seated Romans show evidence of a heavier and which appear to be a kind of less delicately constructed klismos. Both features, the light and the heavy, were popularised during the Classicist time. The klismos influence is seen in French Empire styles, in English Regency, and in particular types of profound uniqueness around Denmark and Sweden during 1800.

China
The history of the chair in China isn’t able to be tracked as far as the ancestry of the chair in Egypt and Greece. Since the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) an undamaged serial of drawings and artworks was kept safe, displaying the insides and outer parts of Chinese buildings and the kinds of furniture. Also preserved from the 16th century are some chairs of wood or lacquered wood, that display an amazing similarity to pictures of previous chairs.

Like in Egypt, there existed two iconic chair designs in China: a chair of four legs and a folding stool. This chair has been constructed both with and without arms however always having its square seat and straight stiles (standing side supports) to firm the back. In one kind, it has been seen, the stiles were slightly curved on top of the arms for the purpose of fit the shape of the S-shaped back splat (the centre upright of its chairback). Together, all three areas had been mortised on the yoke-like top rail. Although the design of this back splat then had an introduction for English chairs in the Queen Anne period, wooden pieces that just to a limited capability embolden corner joints (and were loose as well) are a feature signatory to Chinese chairs. The four legs are set through the seat frame, which stops around the rounded staves. Every member is round in section or is given rounded edges—an acknowledgement maybe to the bamboo tradition. The seat is not comfortable and might have had a plaited form. These chairs required of the sitter to remain stiff and upright; when too much weight is placed on the back, the chair has a tendency to collapse. In patriarchal Chinese houses of this era armchairs most likely were kept for senior individuals, for they were respected greatly.

The Chinese folding stool is understood to have been brought to China from the West. It does not vary much from the Egyptian or Scandinavian folding stools, but it possesses a change in that the top rail is prettily fixed to the two legs of the stool in a curved member, which is more often than not seen with metal mounts. From a Western point of view the resultant effect of both of these furniture designs is stylized. The structure and decoration elements are combined in a style that is all at once naïve and refined. The pieced-together appearance is an outcome of the way that the individual items do not look to have been fixed together with either glue or screws, but are mortised on one another and held in its place in the style of a Chinese puzzle.

Spain: 17th century
The Golden Age of Spain of the 17th century also had its name on the chair. Paintings show a kind of chair with a relatively unrefined wooden frame; a back and seat, nailed on, consisting of two layers of leather, with horsehair stuffing in the layers, stitched to bring out a pattern of little pads. The front board and a similar board from the back could be folded after unscrewing some little iron hooks. Therefore the chair was an easily portable piece of furniture when traveling which, in the same era, had the dignity of a four-legged, high-backed armchair.

The Netherlands: 17th century
A low, square, upholstered style of chair is evidenced in engravings of the inside of rich Dutch homes by Abraham Bosse, a French artist, and in paintings by the Dutch artists Johannes Vermeer and Gerard Terborch. Though this type of chair may also be made in countries in which Dutch styles of interior decoration and Dutch furniture won preference, it is not decided that the form actually was born in The Netherlands. Typically, the legs of the chair are smooth, round in section, and of thin measurements; they are sometimes baluster-shaped (vase-shaped) or twisted. It is patently a bourgeois piece of furniture and was manufactured in vast numbers, as can be seen from one of Abraham Bosse’s engravings, in which there is an entire row of this kind of chairs lined up along a wall. The style asserts itself with its elegant proportions and delicate upholstery in gilt leather or fabric framed with fringes.

France and England: 17th and 18th centuries
The French Rococo chair in its most mature form—that was, as progressed in Paris around 1750—disseminated over most of Europe and was imitated or copied in the mid-20th century. The design owes the popularity to a combination of leisure and delicacy. The seat adheres to the human body and allows a relaxed sitting position. The back is bow-shaped, the legs curved. Usually the seat and back are upholstered, and there are little upholstered pads on the armrests. Smooth transitions are made between seat frame, legs, and back conceal all the joints, which are constructed solidly on craftsmanlike methodology in spite of the absence of stretchers between the legs.

French Rococo chairs and imitations thereof are made from wood of quite thick dimensions; but each member is deeply molded, all extra wood has been removed, and more upmarket designs would be further embellished with intricately delicate and decorative carvings. The wood can be varnished, stained, painted, or gilded. Silk damask or tapestry may be used for all the upholstery on the seat, back, and armrests; canework is in some cases used instead of upholstery.

English chairs in the 18th century were more variable in style than the French. The French taste for stylistic uniformity, which lead from the most distinguished circles in Paris and Versailles through most of France and was popular in several parts of the Continent, had no parallel in England. Prior to 1740, the most commonly used wood was walnut; thereafter, and for the rest of the century, it was mahogany. Walnut, though beautiful in hue, was soft and therefore less suited to wood carving than to rounded, curving forms. Outer surfaces, such as the back and seat frame, were usually veneered. During the walnut period, highly overstuffed armchairs, covered with leather or embroidered material, were also developed. The best upholstery of this period is precisely and firmly modelled and accentuated by braiding or tacks. When imports of mahogany became common, no specifically new chair designs appeared, but the character of the woodwork changed. Mahogany, having a firmer, closer grain, could be cut thinner, which meant that individual parts of the chair could be more slender in shape. Mahogany also lent itself better to carving than walnut. Carving was concentrated more on the arms and back than on the legs, which as a rule were straight and smooth with chamfered (bevelled) edges and molding. There was a wealth of variety in chairback designs, featuring elegant, pierced, vase-shaped splats or two upright posts connected by horizontal slats (ladderback).

Alongside the French Rococo chair and the best English chairs in walnut and mahogany, the stick-back chair was relatively unaffected by the stylistic changes of the day. Originally a medieval form, known, for example, from paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and still found in mid-20th century in the churches and inns of southern Europe, the stick-back chair (in all of its variations) consists basically of a solid, saddle-shaped seat into which the legs, back staves, and possibly the armrests are directly mortised. This typically peasant form underwent a renewal and a process of refinement in England and America during the 18th century. Under the name Windsor chair (a term that seems to have been used for the first time in 1731) or Philadelphia chair, it became popular and was widely distributed throughout the world.

Late 18th to 20th century
During the Neoclassical period, no basic changes took place in chair forms, but legs became straight and dimensions lighter. Backs in the shape of classical vases replaced the fanciful outlines of the Rococo period. Around 1800, freely executed imitations of Greek and Roman chairs of the klismos type, with curved legs and backrest, appeared. French chairs of the Empire period, executed in dark mahogany and embellished with ornate bronze mounts, created a ponderous effect.

In cheaper versions of inferior workmanship, bourgeois chairs of the 19th century carried on the traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The only real innovations were the bentwood (wood that has been bent and shaped) chairs in beech that became popular all over the world and were still made in the 20th century. Around 1900 the continental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles (French and German styles characterized by organic foliate forms, sinuous lines, and non-geometric forms), and the Arts and Crafts movement in England (established by the English poet and decorator William Morris to reintroduce idealized standards of medieval craftsmanship), gave rise to original chair designs by Eugène Gaillard in France, Henry van de Velde in Belgium, Josef Hoffman in Austria, Antonio Gaudí in Spain, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland. These new furniture styles did not exercise wide, let alone decisive, influence. The Art Nouveau chairs designed by the French architect Hector Guimard, for example, are collector’s pieces, but his name is known to a broader public only because of his fanciful entrances to the Paris Métro.

Modern
After World War I, the Bauhaus school in Germany became a creative centre for revolutionary thinking, resulting, for example, in tubular steel chairs designed by the architects Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and others. During World War II, the aircraft industry accelerated the development of laminated wood and molded plastic furniture. The dominant chair forms of this period go back to designs by Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, and Charles and Ray Eames. Rapid technical developments, in conjunction with an ever-increasing interest in human-factors engineering, or ergonomics, hint that completely new chair forms will probably be evolved in the future.

Bookkeeping is the recordkeeping of the money values of the function of a business. Bookkeeping grants the details from which accounts are drafted but is a separate process, prior to accounting.

Basically, bookkeeping finds two kinds of information: (1) the current value, or equity, of a business and (2) any changes in value—profit or loss—taking place in the entity during a single time period.

Management officials, investors, and credit grantors all demand this information: management so as to interpret the results of operations, to control costs, to budget for the future, and to make financial policy decisions; investors in order to analyse the upshot of business operations and make decisions for buying, holding, and selling securities; and credit grantors to analyze the financial statements of a business in judging whether to grant a loan.

Pieces of financial and numerical charts are found for nearly every country with a commercial backbone. Records of commercial contracts have been uncovered in the ruins of Babylon, and accounts for both farms and estates had been held in ancient Greece and Rome. The dual-entry style of bookkeeping began with the furthering of the enterprising republics of Italy, and tutorial manuals for bookkeeping were created within the 15th century in many Italian cities.

During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Industrial Revolution granted an important stimulus to accounting and bookkeeping.

The development of manufacturing, trading, shipping, and subsidiary services made correct financial books a must-have. The past of bookkeeping, in fact, resembles closely the ancestry of commerce, industry, and government and, in some part, assisted in forming it. The international expansion of industrial and commercial activity required higher cosmopolitan decision-making processes, which in turn required more sophistication in the selection, classification, and presentation of information, increasingly with the aid of computers. Taxation and government regulation became more significant and resulted in greater requirement for information; business entities had to provide information to support their income tax, payroll tax, sales tax, and other tax reports. Governmental agencies and educational and other nonprofit institutions also developed in size, and the demand for bookkeeping for their inner departmental operations went up.

Although bookkeeping methodology can be extremely complex, it is all based on two styles of books employed in the bookkeeping procedure—journals and ledgers. A journal must have the daily transactions (sales, purchases, and so on), and the ledger must have the information of individual accounts. The daily records kept in the journals are written in the ledgers.

At the end of every month, as a general rule, an income statement and a balance sheet are constructed from the trial balance posted out of the ledger. The purpose of the income statement or profit-and-loss statement is to show an analysis of those changes that took place in the business equity resulting due to the operations of the period. The balance sheet provides the financial condition of the business at the particular point derived from assets, liabilities, and the ownership equity.
